I have 4 beautiful poinsettias and I am wondering if they can be transplanted outside after the holidays.?

I live in Indiana. When I lived in Florida I planted one outside and it grew to be over 4 feet tall.

No. I live in Indiana too, they'll freeze. Keep them in pots, and you can put them outside during the summer. Keep them trimmed back so they don't get too leggy as the winter sunlight usually isn't strong enough for them.

Reply:You can plant them as an annual, not as a perennial. Florida, California, and parts of Texas (or a similar environment) is required for year round growth.



What you CAN do, is to transfer to a larger pot, leave it in the house for the cold months and put it outside for the warm months. That way you won't have to buy new ones each year.
Reply:First put them outside in pots and see how they go. If you decide it's ok to transplant give them room to spread.
Reply:Any frost will kill it. So it will be possible from about mid-May through early October.



Getting them to turn red again next year, though, is a complicated process, and would take a whole page of typing to explain.
Reply:Not if you live in Indiana. They are a tender plant, if you let it freeze, it's dead. I know they liveoutside in Florida, my aunt had one over 10'tall in her yard in southern Fla.

Reply:To cold there. They need "warm" weather conditions, they are a native of Central Mexico and south into northern south America.
Reply:Way too cold in Indiana for them - they'd die instantly. You could probably put them outside in the summer though and then bring them back inside in the fall. Poinsetties are native to Mexico so they need to be in a warm and sunny place.
