Does anyone know any tips on planting a poinsettia outside?

(from Christmas) I heard u can plant them outside....I just don't want to kill it.

Does anyone know any tips on planting a poinsettia outside?
Even if I could do it here in Zone 6, I would not as they are poisonous for cats.

Here is a good article about the history of poinsettias and how to take care of them.
Reply:Some people in Florida grow them outdoors. I don't think it will work unless you live in a warm place.

My advice would be to just let it go, and buy a new one next Christmas.
Reply:Hi, I just returned from central america where they seem to grow wild. In the US, I don't believe they'd do well unless in a well lit, yet well protected area lika a covered, sheltered patio. I have also seen them growing along the coast in Northern Baja near Ensenada,Mexico. Cold and intense sun/heat is their enemy.
Reply:atleast not me
Reply:itll die.

in the summer you have to let it be in dim light and cold air so that it wont die. so if you have it outside it will definitely die.
Reply:It needs to be warm and damp all the time, or it will die. It's a tropical plant.
Reply:WHAT IS THAT???
Reply:They are a tropical plant, and I don't think that we live in a climate where that would be possible. I will watch your answers.
Reply:In the U.S. (at least northern half of U.S. for certain) a poinsettia is an annual plant. It will make it through one growing season if you are lucky.
