I want to repot a poinsettia what type of compost should i use?

I used a good premium potting mix and used a tablespoon of bone meal. I did not disturb the root system, just used a larger pot, put charcole in the bottom, three inches dirt on top of charcole, put plant in, and then filled up the space in the larger pot with dirt. I followed the guidlines about putting plant in the dark (see below) and was rewarded with flowers before Christmas.

Wait until all the leaves have fallen then cut back the stems to leave about 4ins. Keep it dry and put the pot in a cool, shady position.

Wait until early may to repot it. A general purpose compost with some added vermiculite will be sufficient. Start watering and feed regularly.



At the end of September, cover the plant with black polythene early every night and remove it in the morning. Try to aim for about 14hrs of darkness and do this until the beginning of December.



Your Poinsettia will bloom in time for Xmas. Good luck, x
Reply:an ordinary potting compost should be OK, cut it well down, keep it outdoors during the summer, then in about September bring it indoors. I was told that it needs 13 hours total darkness a day for a couple of months to ensure that the bracts turn red, BUT I live in Spain, and we grow them outdoors all the time here, and mine turned a beautiful red just right for Christmas with out any special treatment.
